Sergio and his friends on the Way

The Way of Sergio: Madrid, Sarria and Santiago

It’s been a few years now, and I still surprise myself, Sergio, with a shy smile remembering this trip. Not so much because of its significance, but rather because of the beautiful memories it has left us.

Back in 2016, 10 engineering students with very close friendships organised an end-of-year trip with a lot of enthusiasm but without a big budget. We wanted to do something different that would allow us to live an experience together and be surrounded by nature (beer couldn’t be missing either). So, the Way became the perfect choice. We surprised ourselves by booking just a few bus tickets and leaving everything else to the adventure.

I can understand people who describe it as a journey of self-discovery. With the Way, we not only immerse ourselves in our thoughts, but it also serves to uncover new resolutions.

However, this was not our case. Our group represented the complete opposite idea of a self-immersive journey. We mingled with many other groups, bathed in a river, and stamped our credentials in as many bars as we can. We also enjoyed the music thanks to a friend who is a festival expert, but most of all, we laughed our heads off.

Accommodation

We had no problems finding hostels even when we were a large group. At each stop, we were always offered recommendation leaflets so that we would not be left out in the cold. We only had to call in the morning to let them know our arrival time.

It must be said that you arrive early, have an early dinner, and go to bed even earlier to be able to rest (what we needed). It is the only way to continue the journey in the early hours of the next day.

Not everything was perfect. Fatigue accumulated in the backpack after each early start. Above all, our feet suffered. It is necessary to have good shoes and to prevent the dreaded blisters before it is too late. I’m sure some of us still regret the football match we organised at the hostel on the second day. Although it wasn’t bad, some of us had to ask for a taxi to wait for us at the end of the stage.

Santiago de Compostela

Despite this, all thoughts of giving up were discarded. The satisfaction when we finally arrive at our destination was big. More than 100km separated us from Santiago on the first day, and it was incredible to have reached the finish line together. We had made it!

We had earned a good dinner, and it was well known that we were in the right place to enjoy it. Santiago surprised us a lot, although it was not only because of what it took to get there. Without a doubt, it is a destination that I would repeat. I want to enjoy the cathedral again, which at the time was in the middle of building work.

This trip brings back a lot of good memories. There is something special about the north. For anyone who is thinking of doing the Pilgrim’s Route, I strongly recommend you let yourself be seduced by its people, its gastronomy, and its landscapes in good company. What’s more, I think it’s about time I made a couple of calls and tried to repeat the experience.

Good Way!

Sergio
